This short article can be used with any army in order to allow unusual formations that would otherwise only be used in apocalypse games to be used in normal games of 40k. So whether you like to have an elite army of aspect warriors, a fleet of crisis suits or a cavalry army of rough riders, these simple changes to the force organisation chart allow you to have the army that appeals to you most in games of 40k.

When using these special formations you must inform the opponent beforehand of the nature of your army since they operate in a dramatically different fashion. For example an imperial guard player using one of these formation types must say that he/she is using either imperial guard raiders, an imperial guard siege regiment, or imperial guard special ops.

Raiders: A raiding force relies on fast elements of the army to launch rapid strikes into enemy territory, either to soften up an opposing army and gauge its strength or to strike at vital locations such as fuel and ammo stores and inflict as much damage as possible before reinforcements can arrive to retaliate.

Troops and other scoring units no longer count as scoring units.

Fast Attack units count as scoring units. Vehicles that are fast attack also count as scoring units provided that they are able to move and can fire at least one weapon.

The force organisation chart is amended as follows:

Required: 1 HQ, 2 Fast Attack

Optional: 1 HQ, 2 Elites, 4 Fast Attack, 2 Troops, 2 Heavy Support.

Siege Regiment: A siege regiment consists of the most powerful guns in the army, and is typically created when attempting to conquer an enemy bastion or other fortified location, although they have sometimes been formed to deal with an especially powerful enemy formation or war machine that is impervious to small arms fire.

Troops and other scoring units no longer count as scoring units.

Heavy Support units count as scoring units. Vehicles that are heavy support also count as scoring units provided that they are able to move and can fire at least one weapon.

The force organisation chart is amended as follows:

Required: 1 HQ, 2 Heavy support

Optional: 1 HQ, 2 Elites, 4 Heavy Support, 2 Fast Attack, 2 Troops.

Special Ops: Special ops formations are typically drawn up for a specific mission of vital importance, with lesser units playing little or no part in the mission. Such a mission may be the culmination of years of war and can either deal a crippling blow to the enemy or save one side from disaster.

Troops and other scoring units no longer count as scoring units.

Elites units count as scoring units. Vehicles that are elites also count as scoring units provided that they are able to move and can fire at least one weapon.

The force organisation chart is amended as follows:

Required: 1 HQ, 2 Elites

Optional: 1 HQ, 4 Elites, 1 Troops, 1 Fast Attack, 1 Heavy Support.
